Getting Started

Basalt is a free and open source suite of applications for creating, hosting, and competing in programming competitions.

Administrating

To administer a competition, check out the Basalt CLI docs to get started!

Competing

To participate in a competition, download the Basalt Desktop application. Be sure to download the release appropriate for your OS and architecture.

Note

MacOS Users: If opening Basalt Desktop gives you “Basalt Desktop.app is damaged and cannot be opened”, MacOS is lying to you and you may just need to run sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Basalt\ Desktop.app. Alternatively, you can open the Privacy & Security settings pane and scroll down to the Security section to remove the quarantine.

Windows Users: Defender may think Basalt Desktop is a virus. This just happens sometimes, and if SmartScreen blocks it from running, click “More Info” and “Run Anyways”. Feel free to scan Basalt Desktop with Virustotal!

Once you’ve installed and opened the application, you will be prompted to provide the IP address of the server. After you’ve provided the IP, click next to continue to login.

Your login credentials will be provided to you by the competition administrator. Once you’ve logged in, you’re ready to begin competing!
